In this week’s finale of Work of Art, Bravo has finally loosened its reins on the show’s three remaining artists: Kymia Nawabi, Sara Jimenez and Young Sun Han. The harsh time constraints that have hindered work in past challenges have been lifted, and the artists are given three months to produce an exhibition from the comfort of their own studios.

The show follows Simon as he scuttles between the artists’ places of residence in at least two Fiat 500’s, two months into the challenge.

Work of Art didn't suck this week. The challenge, street art, was acceptable, the guest judge, Lee Quinones, was fitting, and the show's decision to pair up the artists in teams of two meant that there was ample time to actually show each work. What's more, we had an entire episode without a single teary recollection, which meant there was a bunch of space that Bravo was forced to fill with an interesting but well-explained change in the personality of a character. Like they were developing. It was weird.

Sometime during the first minute of this week's episode of Work of Art, my TV's closed captioning simply said: “[All groaning]”. That's a fitting reaction to most of the episode.

No two ways about it: this week was incredibly boring. The challenge (work with kids) was unoriginal, the guest judge (producer Sarah Jessica Parker) was a punt, and the elimination (Tewz) was overdue. There was crying, but no tits. In light of this, we'll stick to a few general observations.

Work of Art Episode One: Kitsch or Ditch

Is there anything Bravo could possible do to improve upon Work of Art’s premier season? The mind reals with that thought, but if the first episode is any indication (and it almost never is), Bravo’s challenges may exhibit a little more ingenuity than the previous season. This week’s challenge, transform a “bad” work of art, already raises the bar compared to last year’s middle school portrait assignment. Contestants were invited to chose a work from a room filled with kitschy art, and somehow a ceramic teddy remained on its pedestal. The closing shot for the scene zooms in on the teddy while ominous music plays overhead. Hilarious.
