It’s Out! Another ArtReview Power 100 List

Another ArtReview Power 100 List kicks off today, setting in motion the now annual tradition of quibbling over the top slots. This year, like every year, the list leaves room for shock, jest, and flak over who can muscle their way into the art world’s top ranks. It’s the type of list that leaves you scratching your head: What makes Kunsthalle Zürich’s Beatrix Ruf more powerful than MoMA’s Glenn Lowry? Is it possible to be young and powerful? Poor and powerful? We spoke with ArtReview Editor Mark Rappolt about this year’s list, and how its international jurors tend to reward those working on a global scale.

This week at the L Magazine, I wonder why we bother. Most art’s crap, and everybody knows it; can a case be made for the bad review?

Take Your Time: Museum Hours, The Quiet Room, and Mariner 9 in Review

As I wrap up my visit at the Toronto International Film Festival this week, I’ve begun to notice an emerging theme: duration. I’ve already complained at length about the run time of Spring Breakers, but there’s plenty more to discuss in the Wavelength and Future Projection programs. Jem Cohen’s feature film Museum Hours and Liang Yue’s installation The Quiet Room, at The Gladstone, both offer notable examples of a work playing off slow pacing, while Kelly Richardson’s Mariner 9 at The ROM fits the bill a little less successfully.

Though there’s too much to possibly visit in Chelsea alone, at least a few events in Brooklyn, Soho, and Uptown should make your must-see list. Creative Time’s sent some art to space, the Brooklyn Museum is organizing hundreds of open studios across the borough, and at least one event requires 3-D glasses. Also this month, check out shows at Marian Goodman, Tibor de Nagy, Venus Over Manhattan, the Swiss Institute, and Gavin Brown.

Art Fag City at The L Magazine: My Review of My “Review” Review

by Paddy Johnson on July 5, 2012

I made up my entire review of Christian Jankowski’s piece “Review.” Thankfully, no one will read it: it’s sealed in a bottle for display, along with the handwritten responses of more than 80 other critics. The piece is, itself, the reviews. Currently, they’re arranged in groupings that resemble small islands on the floor of Friedrich Petzel Gallery.

Stan Douglas is continuing with the historical fauxtojournalism project he started a few years ago, where he meticulously recreates photographs that may or may not exist. The final photographs are large, richly colored, and attractive, but their conceit may be wearing thin.

In this town, it’s never too late to talk about art fairs. Missed last week’s art fairs? No problem. We’ll be redoing this whole thing come May when Frieze, NADA, and Pulse launch a second assault on the city. The Golden Fag Award will have to wait until all the fairs have run. In the meantime, a full recap of last week’s shenanigans.
