This Week’s Must-See Art Events: Artists Take Over Your Landline

Every summer there’s a gallery that finds an occasion to launch a cat show, and this season is no different. Start the week off at Con Artist Collective, which will host a show demonstrating artists love for kitties. Consider that show a warm up for what’s to come. Thursday in Gowanus, we’ll see what happens when artists are given access to a treasure trove discarded electronics. We can’t wait. On Friday, head out to this week’s latest artist zine festival and wrap the week up Sunday with the 25 anniversary of Queens Pride at the Queens Museum. It’s a one day pop-up exhibition looking at the history of the event and bound to be both informative and joyful.

GIF of the Day: Time_Frame

In honor of the GIF’s 30th anniversary, GIPHY is launching a physical show featuring the work of 30 GIF artists called Time_Frame. 151 artworks and installations from well-known artists such as Lorna Mills, Faith Holland, Carla Gannis, Jelly Gummies, and Robert Beatty will be on view at Wallplay Gallery June 15–22.

As far as exhibitions go, a week is a pretty short time frame. But it looks like there will be as more panel panels, presentations, screenings, artist performances, and workshops during that time than you can shake a stick at, so that’s a positive. We have some concerns about the theme, though, as there’s barely one to speak of. The exhibition text promises to “showcase artists working in and pushing the boundaries of digital art”—so basically it’s a group of artists whose work the curators like.

To be fair, though, the artist list probably isn’t that different than one we’d assemble ourselves. It includes some of the most talented artists working in the field, and has been assembled by GIPHY Arts, Wallplay, Rhizome and Transfer”.

So, even without a theme, we’re excited to look at the show. A few samples of what’s in store below.

This Week’s Must-See Art Events: Use Your Sick Days Wisely

There’s plenty of good stuff to do this week, starting with a Felix Gonzalez-Torres book launch reception at the Whitney Monday night. Carla Gannis has a book launch of her own Tuesday night at the Pratt library, including augmented-reality elements. The rest of the week is dominated by painting and digital art—exemplified by Michael William’s solo show of digitally-produced paintings at Gladstone and Jason Lahr’s digitally-informed paintings at the Painting Center, both of which open Thursday night. For digital purists, check out Low Res: Spatial Politics in the Cloud at NARS Foundation’s Sunset Park digs Friday night. For painting purists, catch Rebecca Leveille’s brushy portraits at Site:Brooklyn. Fans of both media will be relieved to note they’re but a few subway stops away. End the week with FIN’s ICE PIX album release party on Sunday in Bushwick, which features performances from rising stars such as FlucT and Raul de Nieves. Your Monday hangover will be so worth it.

GIF of the Day: Chelsea Manning’s Sentence Commuted!!!

Holy crap! Finally some good news! President Obama, in his last days in office, has commuted the majority of the sentence of Wikileaks whistleblower Chelsea Manning. She will go free on May 17th, far sooner than her planned release date of 2045.

To celebrate, enjoy excerpts from Faith Holland’s “Chelsea Manning Fan Art” (2014). At least there’s one cyberpunk-as-fuck victory in our dystopian future.

This Weeks Must-See Art Events: The Art World Mobilizes for 2017

For everyone who has complained that the art world is too apolitical in the past month or so, take note of how 2017 is kicking off. We have a week of feminist exhibitions, the start of a month-long project about Trump’s America Saturday at Petzel Gallery, and shows that tackle topics from water contamination to the holocaust and the attack on the Pulse nightclub in Orlando.

Welcome to the art world in the Trump era. If the list of participants at Petzel’s event is any indication, the big guns are coming out.

GIF of the Day: Faith Holland’s “Chelsea Manning Fan Art”

If so, I would be petting an alligator (because you can do that there), walking along the edge of the world (because you can do that there, too), and visiting 2 Freaky 2 Friday at Pelican Bomb Gallery X (which you still have time to do because the exhibition runs through September 18). The mostly femme and femme-identifying artists in the exhibition all explore images of celebrity in a sometimes critical, sometimes celebratory way that fits in so well with the AFC brand. A note on the exhibition from curator (and friend of AFC) Amanda Brinkman:

I grew up with a British mother and an American father in a small German town with a population fewer than 9000 people. Celebrities were my lingua franca and my guide to living like an American kid in the ’80s—something I was determined to do even halfway across the globe….I eventually threw away my New Kids on the Block sheets, but my interest in celebrities and what they can represent continues today. I’m routinely condescended to by intelligent people who “don’t even own a TV” and see stars as the ultimate waste of time and brainpower. But celebrities can help us theorize the relationship between the surface-level, lowbrow, and easily accessible and the deep, highbrow, and complex in incredibly fruitful ways.
