This Week’s Must-See Art Events: Hacking Dystopias

This weekend’s must-see events include a lot of AFC’s friends and favs, from Friday’s discussion on hacktivism as part of Joyce Yu-Jean Lee’s project FIREWALL Internet Cafe to fundraiser events featuring the work of AFC’s own Matthew Leifheit and F.A.G. Bar artist Macon Reed on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. But during the week, do check out solo shows from Leanne Shapton (Tuesday) and Sherrie Levine (Wednesday). Thursday’s all about dystopia, with sci-fi cityscapes by Romain Erkiletlian and found hyper-generic product packaging from Maryam Jafri. Hack on, New York.

This Week’s Must See Events: Suggested Double Dates

This week, good events come in pairs. Art handling gets its moment of glamour with a charity calendar launch on Tuesday at Field Projects and a workshop at the Cue Foundation on Saturday. Wednesday night, hop from holiday parties at Postmasters and Ortega y Gasset. Or attend Sondra Perry’s screening and artist talk at EAI. Perry also has a closing reception at Recess the next night. And if simulacra of tragedies is your thing, check out the creepy photos of Corinne May Botz at Benrubi Gallery or Vincent Tiley’s “Sad Pretty Boys” at Christopher Stout Gallery, on Thursday and Friday respectively.

Announcing F.A.G. and a New, Artist-Run Satellite Show in Miami

We’re pleased to announce that Art F City is launching a new project space/curatorial platform called Fine Art Gallery. Fine Art Gallery will be primarily based out of Brooklyn, but we’re kicking off our programing with a booth in Tiger Strikes Asteroid’s Satellite Show during Art Basel Miami Beach 2015.

We’ll disclose more details about our project in the coming weeks, but we’re pretty excited about the new art fair, which will feature international artist-run spaces and collectives in Miami Beach’s defunct Ocean Terrace Hotel. Tiger Strikes Asteroid released the exhibitor list today, and we’re happy to report that it includes many of the galleries who participated in Baltimore’s Artist-Run Art Fair this summer, which we christened “The Art Fair that Doesn’t Suck”.

Friday Links: Opportunities Edition

We linked to this yesterday in our Interview with Clynton Lowry at Art Handler Magazine, but the Installator tumblr is truly astonishing. The beauty and spectacle of an install pictured perfectly; the copper statue, La Defense, dangling from a crane, the shiny La Grande Madre by Jeff Koons, wrapped and unwrapped, workers deconstructing Art Basel Miami Beach. The Buy Art Fair has just launched in Manchester. Frank Cohen, the “Manchester Medici”, offers advice on buying art. He has some pretty obvious recommendations like “buy what you like” but also encourages new collectors to go for more inexpensive options such as prints. [BBC]

The artist-run space Field Projects has put out an open call for their November 2015 exhibition, curated by Lauren Haynes of the Studio Museum in Harlem. It’s a good opportunity to show in Chelsea or at least make curators aware of your work. [Field Projects]

Endless lawsuits related to art authentication have caused many to avoid offering the service to collectors and dealers altogether. The Andy Warhol Foundation dissolved its authentication board; “One year our legal bill ran up $7 million,” according to director Joel Wachs, “we got tired of giving money to lawyers. We’d rather be giving it to artists.” [Forbes]

For $50, Harvard students living in campus housing can rent prints from the Harvard Art Museums’ collection—including originals from Picasso and Warhol. [NBC News]

In related Boston news, there’s been a lot of social media speculation about the “mystery man” who appeared on the facade of the former Hancock Building. It turns out the vinyl mural is the work of French street artist JR. [The Boston Globe]

This is great. The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation is offering grants for artists to address racial injustice in the US prison system. Applications for the Artist as Activist Fellowship are due December 7th. [The Art Newspaper]

Brooklyn artist Tina Trachtenburg has immortalized the internet-famous “Pizza Rat” in soft sculpture. For $80, you can own one of the artist’s plush rats, but the pizza isn’t included. That’s an additional $20. [Artnet News]

Useless Press is a new publishing collective edited by Sam Lavigne, Adrian Chen and Alix Rule that creates eclectic internet things. So far, they’ve found a data set of decapitated animals and issued a call for proposals to work with this material and published “Call to Wait” a phone line that puts callers on hold for seven years. “Call to Wait” is described as a “long term project”. Anyway, this is brilliant. Here’s a story on another project, Data Drive, which is a paper Facebook. [Flavorwire]
