Fall out from the South Bronx party thrown by artist Lucien Smith, art dealer Jeanne Greenberg-Rohatyn, and real estate mogul Keith Rubenstein continues. The event featured bullet-riddled cars and trash can fires, which many thought were in poor taste. News erupted for days after enraged residents, politicians and artists learned of the party. Now, two weeks later, AFC has learned that Avery K. Singer refused Greenberg Rohatyn’s request for a studio visit, on the grounds that the party was insensitive and likely to lead the gallery into further trouble. We couldn’t agree more. Since last Monday’s deluge of overwhelming negative press over artist Lucien Smith’s “Macabre Suite”, the art dealer has faced fire for co-hosting Smith’s “curated” event in celebration of two new luxury condo towers breaking ground along the South Bronx waterfront. (Conveniently enough, Greenberg-Rohatyn is rumored to be starting another gallery in the Bronx.)

BRAVO has discovered a new reality show gold mine: the art world. Not only is the network casting for a docudrama on 20-something gallerinas, but yesterday, the TV network released a tear-filled trailer for Work of Art’s second season (beginning October 12th). The series seeks to find America’s next great artist (so far they’ve come up empty handed), once more pitting a few artist hopefuls against one another for a cash pot of $100,000. We’ll soon see what fruits the season has to bear.

I’ve come to the conclusion that I’d be much happier if Work of Art were a PBS style reality show a la Frontier House with a series of art historians and critics discussing the realities of art world as we watch the struggling members of the art world. I like drama as much as the next person, but I found Bravo’s focus on artistic disputes at the expense the art particularly disheartening in this week’s public art challenge. Too many of its participants will be left scarred by this show.
