Brave the cold just a little longer, for we have so much art to see this week. Talks abound, from B. Wurtz on the history of sculpture to Winkleman Gallery’s panel on African-Americans in Soviet culture. We have openings, like a feminist sound art retrospective at CUNY and Greenpoint’s winter open studios night. Round out Sunday with a Genesis Breyer P-Orridge film-screening and book launch at PS1 and we’ll call it a week. Just grin and bear it.

We’re still flying by on September’s openings, but by the time the weekend rolls around, we’re gonna see some signs of new art life. Throughout the week, there’s a heckuva bunch of artist talks and lectures. We just might jump out of our panda costumes to attend a few. By the time the weekend rolls around though, we’ll have some hard choices to make. Pandacam re-enactments or Mike Kelley’s behemoth retrospective at PS1, Rollin Leonard’s solo show of cut up digital bodies, or Robert Longo’s Patsy Cline cover band reuniting at The Kitchen. Only time will tell whether the government’s shutdown has greater effects on the art world than anyone could have predicted.

Now’s the time to brush up on your activism skills. This week, we’re planning a protest with the world’s leading Putin critic, and then taking squatting advice from experienced artists. It’s also a good season to head outdoors. The so-called best Puerto Rican art and culture festival comes to New York, and will mural paint all over El Barrio and the Bronx. Renowned culture critics and artists will shine their wisdom. And on Saturday, we’re hoping for one of the last best PS1 warm ups of the season.
