Call in cable access shows featuring men wearing business suits on treadmills while painting don’t need much commentary from me. Add to this the fact that the most avid consumers of Let’s Paint TV are rivaling L.A. gangs who under the guise of suggesting subject matter and inspiration for the paintings, call to issue death threats, and I’ve officially found the competition/apples to Ben Coonley’s orange.* Watch and enjoy.

An artist named Daniel Barrow has created a video/performance called “Winnipeg Babysitter” that’s a compilation of cable access shows from the 80’s. Hilarious, cringe-worthy and heartbreaking at the same time, it’s a stellar piece of work that all the crowned heads of Europe should watch and celebrate.

(and yes I love this clip)

I’ve seen some of his work, but not that piece. He’s up for the Sobey prize this year no?

Yes and I’m cheering insanely for him.

I saw his performance The face of Everthing when I was in an exhibition at the Walter Philips at Banff. He was doing a residency and they all took 10 minutes each, the first week, to show samples of their work to all the other artists (it was great to be there for that part of it) I overcame my fear of the phrase “please come and see my performance” and was awestruck by his work, so much that I’ve seen that same performance at least two more times when it was mounted here. (The most fun is being in the audience with people who have never seen his work and seeing the look of thrill on their faces after the lights come on again.)
