This is terrible, because I truly want to fully support this institution and feel that, although it’s never lived up to its full potential, its stated mission would be something that Jersey City is in dire need of. I’ve been to fundraisers, etc. but this article is the last straw for all of that good will I’ve been feeling.

One of the staff members of the museum recently put out a call for applications for a Jersey City Only show of artists that will be on display for the annual local open studio tour. Applicants were required to send a copy of a bill in their name to prove residency. One normally assumes a degree of discretion and privacy in open calls unless otherwise stated. However, shortly after the application deadline the curator sent out a bulk email with all 103 of the applying artists’ email addresses listed. This could have been chocked up to an administrative oversight- someone adding the addresses to the cc field rather than the bcc field.

The subsequent rejection letter proved otherwise, as every one of the names and/or email addresses of the artists who were turned down were included for all to enjoy. When horror and dismay was expressed to the curator, she accused the recipients of being sore losers who didn’t understand how hard she was working to put the show together, and that they should be better about supporting the Museum and its programs rather than criticizing her for sharing their names.

If this is the attitude that’s rife there, I can understand how they might have dug themselves into the hole they’re in now.
