We’re excited about ARTyleria’s latest project: BATTLE AUGUST, at New York’s Postmasters Gallery. A curatorial venture by Paulina Bebecka and Robert von Leszczynski, BATTLE AUGUST showcases two battle-style performances that incorporate everything from image-rigged turntables, to dance battles supported by YAK films.

The battles commence Wednesday August 8th with Elka Krajewska vs. John Williams (not to be confused with Jon Williams). The two  will compete against each other with live sound and projection performances. Elka’s weapon of choice: Horizontal Vertigo; a video and sound piece that features turntables rigged to a screen. Elka will use two high-contrast, black and white live-feed projections to create a series of forms and images that destroy or build on one another. John Williams’ retaliation is Record Projection, a piece which incorporates projectors, record players, and sculptural elements that join together to create outbursts of light and sound in a variety of combinations.

New Yak City, legendary organisation behind the now-famous Dancing In the Rain Youtube video, will battle in a more literal sense. Fourteen dancers will part-take in a two on two street-dance battle on August 11th, accompanied by the beats of DJ DP One. The battles that take place on the Postmasters Gallery floor feature the talented dancers that have featured on the YAK FILMS YouTube channel this year, which has gained thousands of followers and positive critical response. There is only one prize, and a ton of talent, so the title of New Yak City King/Queen won’t be decided easily.

There are just two events Postmasters has slated for the BATTLE series, but that’s enough for us. We think this is one of the more fun summer shot conceits this season, so we can’t wait to see it.
