Color Wheel is a series in which we identify a trending color in art, and post a daily image that illustrates its popularity. This week’s color is black.
Before Jenny Holzer made flashing, scrolling, and blinking signs advertising her own signature brand of advice, she made tiny works like the one pictured above. This aluminum sign, no larger than an envelope, is currently on view in Julie Ault’s Macho Man Tell It To My Heart at Artists Space. If someone came up to me on the street and said, “You are trapped on the earth so you will explode,” I’d probably think they’re nutty; but today in the gallery, the phrase moved me. It’s just a haunting reminder that this feeling of being stuck here is one reason why we don’t sit still.

But I don’t want to explode…especially if I have to deal with as much red tape as the sign would suggest. Who needs that kind of paperwork?
