Mass MoCA’s gigantic $65m expansion enables the museum to house long-term, large scale installations. The first batch includes a 15-year commission from Jenny Holzer, a 25-year James Turrell show, a 15-year Laurie Anderson radio station, and a 15-year exhibition of a massive Louise Bourgeois sculpture, among others. This Week’s Must-See Art Events: Rejoice! Our Times Are Intolerable and Nasty Women Are Front-and-Center

New York’s week is characterized by two dominant themes: revisiting art history, and women owning “nastiness”. Monday, NYU’s Grey Art Gallery is launching Inventing Downtown, an ambitious look at how artist-run spaces informed the city’s radical aesthetics decades ago. Tuesday, Kate Hush illuminates archetypal feminine deception and betrayal at Cooler Gallery. She’ll be joined by legions of Nasty Women starting Thursday, when the Knockdown Center kicks-off a four-day fundraiser for Planned Parenthood featuring art, dance parties, and more. Alden Projects has a timely survey of Jenny Holzer’s early poster work that opens Friday, and White Columns is opening it’s 11th Annual, Looking Back. That’s but a sampling of the art history-mining going on this week. Stay nasty, New York, and remember that you always have been.

This Weeks Must-See Art Events: The Art World Mobilizes for 2017

For everyone who has complained that the art world is too apolitical in the past month or so, take note of how 2017 is kicking off. We have a week of feminist exhibitions, the start of a month-long project about Trump’s America Saturday at Petzel Gallery, and shows that tackle topics from water contamination to the holocaust and the attack on the Pulse nightclub in Orlando.

Welcome to the art world in the Trump era. If the list of participants at Petzel’s event is any indication, the big guns are coming out.

Monday Links: The Force Is Not With George Lucas’s Chicago Museum

Well, this can’t be good. New MOCA CEO Chantal Pontbriand has left MOCA after only eight months on the job. This is nothing short of shocking news for the organization, which in the course of a year has transformed its name, mission, and location. In March, she even announced that the organization would be expanding its footprint from three to five floors in its new location as well as a building across the street. It’s unclear whether those plans will stay in tact now that she’s departed. [The Toronto Star]
For the first time, Jesus tomb is getting refurbished and will be opened for an archeological dig. [Daily Beast]
George Lucas plans for a major museum in Chicago have been foiled by a two-year legal battle and he is reportedly looking for an appropriate location in California. People involved in the tentative planning say that San Francisco will probably be the first choice. [The Art Newspaper]
For those people who didn’t already hate golf, there is now a custom hoverboard that carries players around the course. It’s called the GolfBoard. [GolfBoard]

We Went to No Man’s Land: Women Artists from The Rubell Family Collection

At the Rubell Family Collection, dozens of contemporary women artists working in every conceivable medium left us very impressed.

Michael: Here, the blue-chip market and a private collector managed to accomplish something many institutions or independent curators haven’t—presenting an all-female show that feels as if it has nothing to prove.

Paddy: I still can’t get over how many monumental art works in this show so effectively dominated the space that you’d literally feel awestruck by their presence.

Copyright is not the same as public domain. “Instagram photos are not in the public domain. The public domain applies to works over which no copyright exists. The ease with which something can be copied has nothing to do with whether it is in the public domain. If what Prince is doing is acceptable it is as a fair use under the statute, not because of a lack of copyright in the first instance.” [Art Law Report]
Did anyone else find Gawker’s post on Fusion’s traffic numbers, “More People Work at Fusion Than Are Reading Its Most Popular Post,” a bit confusing? The fact that 32 people are viewing a single post is brought up, but without saying if that’s how many people are viewing a post at a single second, minute, or hour. [Gawker]

Art at Its Best 2013: A Top Ten List
