- Linda Yablonsky reports that Jeffrey Deitch reopened his space last week and didn’t bother to show up for the opening. Apparently nobody else did either—Yablonsky described attendance as “weirdly sparse”. It was a group show of drawings, many of which he showed during his brief and tumultuous stint as executive director at MoCA. [Artforum]
- Is Will Ryman about to sell off a bunch of work at auction? Two major online auction houses, Artsy and artnet News, have published glowing reports about his new terrible show at Paul Kasmin this week. In one installation, he’s cast one figure in twelve different materials (oooOOooh), in another he’s created a sculptural version of the 2011 picture depicting President Barack Obama and members of his national security team watching the raid of al-Qaeda head Osama bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. [Why?]
- When new media curator Domenico Quaranta doesn’t know the answer to a question, he just makes shit up. And now some of those inaccuracies will be recorded forever in an interview published in the new book, No Internet, No Art. For example, he could have tried to contact artists Kevin Bewersdorf and Guthrie Lonergan to ask them why they slowed their artistic production, rather then guessing that they did so because “their practice was, like it or not, bringing them straight into the gallery.” I’ve never heard either one of them say that. Tom Moody has many more comments. [Tom Moody]
- Claire Voon casts a critical eye on Tree of Codes, a modern dance production and collaboration between Wayne McGregor, the award-winning British choreographer; Danish-Icelandic visual artist and light wizard Olafur Eliasson; and electronic music producer Jamie. The performance takes place at the Park Avenue Armory, and is described as a “sensory overload without much emotional substance.” [Hyperallergic]
- “There are so many worthy shows in Chelsea right now that it is hard to know what to review.” writes Ben G., who decided that of all the worthy shows Marylyn Dintenfass’s exhibition of cheeseball abstract paintings at Driscoll Babcock Galleries was the one in most need of positive press. Not the decision I would have come to, but to each his own. [artnet News]
- The Republican debates happened. Unsurprisingly, Trump is not strong on foreign policy. May this derail him. [The New York Times]
