A little something old, a little something new.
Multi-media artist Oliver Laric’s Three D Scans project is part conservation effort, part research for new work and part remix. Through the cooperation of 15 institutions around Europe, Laric has been scanning important sculptural work for the purposes of 3D printing. He’s uploaded the 3D information to a website along with GIFs of each sculpture and anyone who cares to use that info to print their own sculpture is welcome to.
The second side of the project is Laric’s tweaks and remixes to the work. The artist recently exhibited the fruits of his labor at Secession in Vienna, it looks like this:
In addition to playing with materials, size and iterations, Laric is also mashing up sculptures from different eras and locations so that something like this:

The Three D Scans site also features some user created prints and remix work in addition to the model information.
It’s certainly easy to imagine 3D-scanning and printing becoming the new standard method for institutions to preserve and make copies of sculpture and there’s no denying that the GIF is a great format for viewing them online.
You can check out the exhibition in Vienna here.
Here’s a few more of our favorite sculptures from the project in GIF form:
