Good news! The deadline to apply for the Two Trees Cultural Space Subsidy Program has been extended until July 15th.

Here at AFC, we’re big fans of Two Trees efforts to grow the cultural community in DUMBO by providing affordable workspace for artists and organizations. As a participants ourselves, we can testify to the fact that the below market rents offered to awardees can be transformative. The workshops, open house and ongoing programming we run simply wouldn’t be possible without it.  

Each year, the organization reviews applications for the 50,000 square feet of space it’s set aside to be rented at below market rates.  Two Trees has subsidized space for artists like Jeanine Oleson and Eric Lopresti (both are IMG MGMT alumni) as well as non-profit organizations like Art in General, Triangle and NYFA. We want to see DUMBO continue to thrive as a destination for community-focused art. If for no other reason, because we work here and we like having good neighbors.

You can see the full guidelines and apply here. You have until July 15th and will be notified by October 1st. There are simply too few of these programs in NYC, so get in there. The only thing you have to lose is your far too expensive workspace.

This Week’s Must See Events: Beach Blanket Bingo

It’s Fourth of July weekend! Or it will be at least. And that means all of the art events will peter out over the next few days. But before then, there are a ton of group shows opening up. We’ve pulled some of the most promising ones from all over the city.

Tonight, you have a rare chance to see some films by Lois Weber, a nearly forgotten female filmmaker from the dawn of Hollywood. Wednesday brings an ambitious program by the Hunter East Harlem Gallery that will address the myriad problems with female incarceration. Thursday, Zwirner will be letting the lunatics run the asylum with a massive staff group show. Friday has a Bushwick exhibition that will probably be (like most Bushwick exhibitions) hit or miss. Then … things will go quiet. But, we’ve pulled some art/beach opportunities so you can see some work while you enjoy the holiday.

New York art types with a penchant for film have a lot on their plate this weekend with the launch of the New York Film Festival. There’s Tom Hanks fighting pirates in the premier of Captain Phillips if you want the mainstream. There’s James Franco’s latest bizarre literary adaptation “Child of God,” if you want what Manohla Dargis refers to as “a scene of on-screen defecation that’s so aggressively up close and personal that it approaches 3-D.” Yes, pirates and poop are very exciting. But those movies will be released across the nation, so it’ll be easy to check them out. This is a listing of the smaller and better offerings that don’t come around everyday.

A great moment in Vine has occurred. Last night we went to famed filmmaker Jonas Mekas’ opening at Microscope Gallery and asked him to shoot his first Vine ever for us. Most Vines look like Jonas Mekas movies to begin with, so we figured why not go to the source? Best moment not caught on Vine: watching Mekas’s eyes light up as he learned what Vine is and what he could do with it.

Art F City Debuts Exclusive New Work at NADA Contained on a Sapphire Mobiado USB Drive

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, 2013 – Art F City is pleased to announce the debut of AFC Selects, a limited-edition USB drive containing exclusive artworks by 11 internationally renowned artists: Anthony Antonellis, Jacob Ciocci, Paul B. Davis, Rollin Leonard, Sara Ludy, Lorna Mills, Shana Moulton, Jon Rafman, Rafael Rozendaal, Bunny Rogers, and Nicolas Sassoon. Each set of artworks is contained on a luxury Mobiado USB drive crafted from a single piece of sapphire crystal. AFC Selects will be available at the Art F City booth at NADA New York.

AFC Selects is generously endowed with enormous talents. Published in an edition of 100, AFC Selects contains original, commissioned artwork, including museum-quality videos and screensavers, large-scale GIFs, and custom software patches. From Sara Ludy’s 449 frame billowing cloud GIF, to Shana Moulton’s video documenting the bizarre effects of new age massage, the drive contains work that is extraordinary, beautiful, and just plain weird. It is nothing short of amazing.

Custom ribbons and packaging for the drive have been designed by artist Bunny Rogers, and each drive comes with a certificate of authenticity signed by Art F City’s Paddy Johnson and all eleven artists. AFC Selects will be the first portfolio of its kind to take net art offline and put it where the collector can have it — inside a single piece of sapphire.
