This Week’s Must-See Art Events: The AFC Goth Benefit and More

The time has finally come. Our Goth Benefit is here. We’ll be converting Collapsable Hole into a goth wonderland, complete with drag performers, surprise guests, and options such as handcuffs for couples. (We’re also having a goth couple outfit contest, so plan accordingly). If last year’s benefit was any indication, this is basically going to be the party of the year.

Wednesday, nurse your hangover with a likely-nipple-tastic Betty Tompkins solo show at Marlborough Contemporary. Other highlights this week include Siebren Versteeg’s digital paintings at bitforms on Thursday, the annual Seven on Seven conference at the New Museum on Saturday, and Sunday’s open studios at the Studio Museum in Harlem.

This Week’s Must See Art Events: Dad Art, Cigarettes, and Graveyards

Thankfully, the next few days aren’t as stressfully-packed with events as Frieze Week was. But we’ve picked out a handful of options if you’re still hankering to see some art. Tuesday night, Matt Bolinger’s solo show opens at Zurcher Gallery, featuring cinematic paintings of Middle-American life. Wednesday, rising art-star Kour Pour opens a new exhibition at Feuer/Mesler that looks to be a new direction for the painter. Thursday is a big night for fans of drawing: David Nolan Gallery has a Jorinde Voigt show and The Drawing Center is offering a Josef Albers-inspired workshop.

The weekend is when things get weirder. Christopher K. Ho’s solo exhibition at Present Company looks at aging, “art dads”, religion, and more Friday night. At the same time, Invisible Exports is opening Frida Smoked, a group show about women artists and their cigarettes. Saturday, Rhizome’s annual Seven on Seven conference will present collaborations between tech insiders and artists and Underdonk will open an ambitious group show of tiny sculptures from dozens of artists. Borna Sammak’s solo show also opens at American Medium that night. But Sunday sounds like it will be the most fun—Hyperalleric has organized a walking tour of artist’s graves in Green-Wood cemetery, so go enjoy the partially-sunny outdoors after a rainy weekend.

The FBI is now offering a $25,000 reward for information in the Warhol “Soup Can” heist from the Springfield Art Museum. Whoever the thief is, they’re either dumb or extremely picky. The set of seven “flavors” stolen will be substantially less valuable without the three left behind: pepper pot, cream of mushroom and consommé (beef). [Inquisitr]

Rhizome announces the collaborators for this year’s Seven on Seven conference. The artist/technologist pairings include Hito Steyerl with Aesthetic Integration co-founder Grant Olney Passmore, and Miranda July with Postlight co-founder Paul Ford. [Artforum]

The Ontario College of Art and Design University (OCADU) has announced plans for an ambitious $60 million expansion and renovation of their main buildings on McCaul Street, just south of Dundas in Toronto. Improvements will be made on the 1920s heritage building, George Reid House, and the famed Will Allsop-designed Sharp Centre for Design. So far, the Ontario government has chipped in $27 million toward the project, but OCADU will have to fundraise the rest. Not mentioned in all of this is what further “revitalization” we can expect in the Grange Park neighborhood: condos, perhaps? [Urban Toronto]

The “American Attitudes Toward Art” survey results have been released and there aren’t too many shockers. 44.3% of people aged 18-24 and 33.8% of people aged 25-34 use social media to discover new art, while people over 65 (at least 29.5% of them) prefer to discover new artists through museums. Based on the press release, be prepared for this report to inspire way too many online art-selling platforms to spring up to cater to millennials. Richard Prince’s new show at Sadie Coles is a series of cartoon-inspired pieces depicting nudist culture. Rhizome Names Its New Executive Director, Pratt Upload Names Its Keynote

The best parody Instagram account we’ve seen: Socality Barbie. This account places a hipster Barbie in various scenes—coffee shops, mountains, bars that have antlers hanging on the wall—applies the perfect filter and voila. It’s the captions that really make the account though. VICE journalist Mohammed Ismael Rasool, along with two colleagues, was arrested in Turkey on terrorism charges while covering the violent conflict between the Turkish government and members of the banned Kurdistan Workers Party. At NEW INC Demo Day 2015, a Cheery Future for Art and Tech

When art mingles with tech, there can be a rush to mass-market artsy/techy products; in the early days of new tech, those products can sound terribly goofy, and they often aim at self-improvement. Take, for example, from 1969, artist Thomas Tadlock’s “Archetron,” a color synthesizer that turned black-and-white signals on a TV into colorful psychedelic imagery. It ended up being sold as a “prophecy, meditation, and healing machine” at a new age center in New York. That product never really caught on; and we tend to remember Tadlock more for his art contribution than a commercial one.

Interest on the Rise for Paddles ON! Digital Auction

Looks like Paddles ON! London, is on its way to replicating the strides made during last year’s much-discussed net-art auction, the first at a major auction house. Last fall, the auction held in New York at Phillips totalled $90,600 on the sale of 16 pieces out of 20 lots. People widely lauded the auction as a success—a GIF sold for $1,300 and the excitement from the live auction crowd was palpable—but financially, the case for Paddles ON! achievements aren’t clear cut. Nine of the works sold for less than their estimated bids, and four of those were bought in by the auction house.
