What’s New at Moving Image London? Lots!

The Moving Image Art Fair’s London participant list is out and they’re listing a largely new roster of participants. Of the 31 exhibitors, nine will return from the fair’s iterations in London and New York. These include Winkleman Gallery (whose owners Murat Orozobekov and Edward Winkleman founded the fair), Ronald Feldman Fine Arts, AV-Arkki, STAMPA, P·P·O·W, Klaus Von Nichtssagend Gallery, DODGE Gallery, Galerie M + R Fricke, and Mark Moore Gallery.

Roberta Smith explains why selling art works from the Detroit Institute of Art’s collection is shortsighted and damaging to the city’s future. “If the United States aims to produce more and import less, it needs designers and inventors of things to be produced. A Day for Detroit in Review

We owe it to Tyler Green of Modern Art Notes for spearheading “A Day for Detroit” and provoking a veritable downpour of tweets and blog posts. Green urged fellow art bloggers to post their favorite works from the Detroit Institute of Arts and tweet with the hashtage #DayDetroit to raise awareness for the museum’s collection. Given the volume of activity, we spent the better part of our day summarizing what happened.

Many US Museums haven’t been following their own guidelines pledging to return art looted by Nazis. MoMA looks particularly bad here, claiming that, after numerous conversations with the George Grosz estate, they had a good title to works by the artist in the collection. Meanwhile, Grosz himself had complained they exhibit a work stolen from him, according to his son, who also claims he spoke with his father about it personally. [NYTimes]

Monday Links: Economies of Scale

Tom Moody’s got a lot of great posts on his blog right now, including a sympathy letter to artists who made Hissbitch’s Five Worst Net Artists list, and some griping over the meet-up event titled, “Social Media, Art, and The Like Economy”. Moody points to Ryder Ripps’ “Zillion Hits vs The Darger Economy” as a better way to frame the discussion. He’s right, of course, though waiting til you’re dead for fame doesn’t leave much to talk about on a panel like this. That said, Marina Galperina expressed an interest in viral content driven by conflict, so perhaps this panel would have benefited from hosting at least one person who doesn’t give a shit about likes. Related, in that same post, a number of commentors speculate on the meaning of a tweet I sent out back in August that read, “Art could do without the art world”. To be clear, I was simply referring to the ridiculous apparatus that holds this economy together, which includes a world of bullshit press releases and art lingo, skeevy dealers and curators, and a press corps that eats all this nonsense up. Death to the White Cube: SEVEN

After a few days at Art Basel Miami Beach, it's easy to forget that art doesn't always come in cubes. Museums and private collections offer some respite, but among the legion of Basel satellite fairs, only one dares break the mould: SEVEN. SEVEN's organizers – BravinLee programs, Hales Gallery, Pierogi Gallery, Postmasters, P.P.O.W., Ronald Feldman Fine Arts, and Winkleman Gallery, all from New York – have worked collaboratively, arranging their works in a flowing exhibition whose geography is determined less by funding and more by content.
