Wednesday Links: Faking It to Make It

Within a 48 hour news cycle, Los Angeles-based band/romantic duo YACHT announced a private sex tape they made was leaked, then said they were going to take ownership and release the tape on their own website, and now it appears the whole situation was just an elaborate X-Files-esque alien sex hoax to promote their new music video. We have a lot of respect for singer Claire Evans — she contributed a great reading list to our Geographically Indeterminate Fantasies show — and the band has a history of trolling clickbait journalism. But given how prevalent revenge porn is online, was it gross for them to pose as victims and prey on our sympathies? Or was this fictionalized narrative no different from what’s seen on the Kardashians? [Pitchfork, Jezebel]
Last night’s results of Christie’s contemporary auction was a reassuring one for the New York art market. The sale totalled $318 million, with over 87% of the lots sold. Reserves were kept low, gaining praise from the auctioneer for being “tight, curated and profitable.” A highlight of the auction records set for artists like Mike Kelley and Agnes Martin was a Basquiat top lot (the 1982 work, “Untitled”) selling for $57.3 million (it was originally estimated at more than $40 million). The Trustees, Massachusetts’ conservation nonprofit, has announced a two-year public art initiative that will kick off this summer with commissioned outdoor installations by Jeppe Hein and Sam Durant. [Boston Globe]
Intersectional feminist dialogues went into overload over bell hook’s gripes with Beyonce’s Lemonade. There’s a smart critique in here about Beyonce’s visual album being a commodification of the black female experience. But that’s kind of a “well, duh” point, and I [Rea] can’t help but feel as if hook is kind of Camille Paglia in her second wave dismissal of pop culture, not to mention low-key transphobic in judging black femme feminists. The New Museum will be expanding its Bowery footprint. The museum announced yesterday it has raised $43 million towards a $80 capital campaign to renovate it 231 Bowery neighbor and connect it to its current building at 235 Bowery. [New York Times]

This Week’s Must-See Art Events: The Art World’s Grand Sausage Grinder

Even though there was a dusting of snow in Manhattan this morning, spring is truly here, as attested by this week’s round-up of events. For graduating students wrestling with the possibility of a post-May malaise regarding their art world career prospects, Devin Kenny’s free Tuesday lecture at Cooper Union on cultural personas through the ages may or may not help in navigating all this talk about artist personal branding. (Yes, we just wrote that unironically.) On Wednesday, BOMB Magazine launches its spring issue at Brooklyn’s Greenlight Bookstore with readings by issue 135 contributors Álvaro Enrigue and Kate Zambreno. Now 35 years old (!), its artists-talking-to-artist format remains timely and engaging. And Friday’s double openings at Postmasters — AFC SPRNG BRK Man Boobs winner Paul Outlaw with Jen Catron and Zach Gage — promises a boat ride through experience economy overload and Google search autocomplete poetry, respectively.

This Week’s Must-See Art Events: Hacking Dystopias

This weekend’s must-see events include a lot of AFC’s friends and favs, from Friday’s discussion on hacktivism as part of Joyce Yu-Jean Lee’s project FIREWALL Internet Cafe to fundraiser events featuring the work of AFC’s own Matthew Leifheit and F.A.G. Bar artist Macon Reed on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. But during the week, do check out solo shows from Leanne Shapton (Tuesday) and Sherrie Levine (Wednesday). Thursday’s all about dystopia, with sci-fi cityscapes by Romain Erkiletlian and found hyper-generic product packaging from Maryam Jafri. Hack on, New York.

Is a Rotterdam museum’s new open art storage facility a game changer for cultural institutions? Set to open in 2018, the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen’s storage space will enable its entire collection to be viewable to the public, a first in the institutional world. And 10% of its storage will be rented out to private collectors for €350 to €400 per square meter. Beyond the potential conflicts of interest, this seems like a win-win situation — collectors get access to conservation services, the museum gets more private investment and artwork loan opportunities. Sergei Shchukin amassed one of the most impressive collections of modern art in the early 20th century. After the Russian revolution, those artworks were scattered to state-owned museums. Now, they’re being reunited for a show at the very-capitalist Louis Vuitton museum in Paris—the first time the collection has ever been shown outside of Russia. [The Guardian]

This Week’s Must-See Art Events: It’s All About the Turtlenecks

This week’s expectedly slow post-ABMB madness, so let’s take a moment to recognize the hard work of art handlers, who had to pack up and deliver all those art fair works. Appropriately enough, the Art Handlers Alliance of New York is hosting a happy hour tonight at Brooklyn’s Interference Archive to talk shop and fair wages. Tomorrow, pick between a big screening of a Hollywood blockbuster (Ridley Scott’s The Martian at MoMA), or a panel discussion parsing Robert Frank’s The Americans (Further Down the Line at Lisa Cooley). Thursday and Friday mark digital art openings at the Pratt Manhattan Gallery (the Christiane Paul-curated surveillance-minded group show, Little Sister) and Postmasters (Kristin Lucas and Joe McKay’s user designer mishaps Away From Keyboard). Post-Postmasters opening, get your fill on turtlenecks with the launch of Catharine Maloney’s Teleplay, Part I photographic series at Printer Matter.

And, since this is December, the weekend promises holiday markets: Saturday’s Tropic-Aire at Regina Rex sounds like, in the words of Michael a “love child from a one-night-stand between a suburban holiday craft fair and NADA”, and Sunday’s Holiday Intercourse at Pioneer Works gives you a good reason to head out to Red Hook. Don’t go into winter hibernation just yet.

Thursday Links: Recessionary Skyscrapers You’ll Never See

One of the worst casualties of the recession? Architecture. Here’s a look at 15 Rem Koolhaas/OMA designs that were never completed. Many of them are located in the NYC area, and certainly would’ve injected some of the classy eccentricism the city’s architecture was once known for back into the streetscape and skyline. [ArchDaily]
After losing thousands of works in Hurricane Sandy, Printed Matter has relocated to a bigger, flood-resistant space with the help of volunteers and donations from artists. [The New York Times]
This is totally click-baity, but this Toronto subway map from the future — 2021, to be precise, when the Eglinton Crosstown LRT finally opens — is pretty exciting. The new transit line will finally replace the bus service for a huge swath of the city’s uptown with rail transit, and hopefully bring Toronto’s public transport into the 21st century. [NOW Magazine]

Curators, according to Michael Govan, are cheap dates. At a contemporary art collecting panel this week at the Frick, the LACMA director advised collectors that they were more likely to get free advice from curators than art advisors. Why do conversations about censorship and “appropriateness” always center on other people’s children? An Illinois woman who sounds insane (she once tried to feed her husband to birds) has started a petition to remove a mural depicting a naked woman tied to a tree and a penis in a hot dog bun. Saskatoon’s Remai Modern recently hosted “Supercommunity Live”, a two-day conference extending E-flux Journal’s Venice Biennale publishing project. This Week’s Must-see Art Events: Back to School Guide

Now that we’re all back from our art-world summer vacation, looking at our schedules can be mildly panic-inducing. Have no fear, we have a syllabus to help you navigate one very hectic September week. Tonight, there are more openings in the Lower East Side than one can possibly see between the hours of six and eight. We recommend prioritizing Regina Rex and 247365, which will be opening a new exhibition space adjacent to their gallery at 57 Stanton. Thursday, head up to Chelsea for a new video installation by Christian Marclay at Paula Cooper, a solo show from Andrew Birk at Johannes Vogt, and a very-timely video piece about the alienation of migrant women by the multi-national artist Elektra KB at BravinLee programs. Friday night, there’s no one Manhattan neighborhood to call homeroom. Sprint from Printed Matter to White Columns to the BHQF’s Foundation University Gallery (FUG) for some new, up-close but not-too-personal in flagrante delicto scenes from the legendary Betty Tompkins.

Saturday afternoon, the must-see event is undoubtedly the Knockdown Center’s Internet Yami-Ichi, an informal marketplace for all things net-art related. AFC’s own Corinna Kirsch with Dylan Schenker will be releasing a zine encyclopedia of everything you need to know about the internet in 2015. Saturday night, there are openings all over Brooklyn, but we recommend heading to REVERSE for an evening of virtual reality escapism. Sunday, check out early drawings from queer filmmaker Barbara Hammer at Company Gallery, a thrift-store-themed show at Soloway, and a panel discussion on Snapchat featuring AFC alumn Matthew Leifheit at Signal. Thursday Links: Everyone Hates the New Björk Retrospective

Björk’s MoMA retrospective reviews are coming in, and there’s not a soul who likes it. Even Flavorwire, the publication founded on the premise that good reviews are the only reviews worth publishing, gives it a thumbs down—and their reviewer liked David Bowie’s Is, one of the worst shows to ever grace museum walls. The most satisfying read on the subject of MoMA’s Björk show, though, is Michael Miller’s takedown. Miller takes on MoMA/Klaus Biesenbach’s unabashed sycophantry for stars. The money quotes: “I felt sad and embarrassed leaving the museum. Embarrassed for Björk mostly, who deserved better than this, but also for MoMA….And the show is hardly a retrospective—it’s starfucking, something increasingly familiar at MoMA, and a failure even at that.” [Artnews]
