Alex Olson: As a Verb, As a Noun, In Peach and Silver
Date: Sunday, September 12th 2010Sunday, October 17th 2010
Venue: Lisa Cooley, 34 Orchard Street

Alex Olson’s new paintings at Lisa Cooley play with layering and color to create forms and patterns that emerge and recede. She inflicts an extensive processes of attraction, subtraction, and markings on each canvas to create a complex architecture of paint that adds nuance to each painting’s surface. Unlike with some process-oriented paintings that put primacy on how the work was made over how it ultimately looks, in Olson’s work the process is precisely what makes the final form of each canvas so engaging.

“Untitled Kickstand, (Bless France, home of manners the best and worst and interesting mixtures), masterly pornography (great enemy of progress), combativeness, great human sceptics, depths of elegance, female qualities, females, ballads of its prehistoric apache, superb hardness and hardiesse of its Voyou type, rebellious adolescent,” is a work by Alex Fleming; to credit, he is also represented by the gallery.

neither alex is much of an artist. one completely lost, the other, completely insecure and full of self conscious gestures that are themselves lost…probably the same person, trying to make money with a shameless attempt at trendy looking abstract art. both have made a petty contribution to a hardworking reality. i never would even read through that entire title in the first place. just saying. bull shit smells.
