In the countdown to the Art F City 10th Anniversary Auction honoring artist Laurie Anderson, we’ll be previewing GIFs from our 10th Anniversary GIF and Print Portfolio, a limited-edition suite of prints and GIFs that includes work by Morehshin Allahyari, Jennifer Chan, Faith Holland, Sara Ludy, Claudia Maté, Rosa Menkman, Lorna Mills, Eva Papamargariti, Angela Washko, and Giselle Zatonyl. Today we’re looking at Lorna Mills’ Oh Superman GIF.
I spent the majority of my studio time in second year undergrad listening to Laurie Anderson’s “O Superman” I was introduced to the album through the college radio station I worked at; everyone there was obsessed with Anderson.
When I spoke to Mills about her GIF she seemed similarly touched by the artist; Anderson’s O Superman video was the first music video she saw when she was a teen—and she had to go to a museum to see it. Laurie has a special place in the creative life of so many art makers I know.
It’s worth mentioning that Mills’ presence on the drive itself is of special significance to me. She and Rea McNamara founded Sheroes, a monthly GIF screening event in which a female figure was honored in the form of GIFs. Our tenth anniversary drive owes its inspiration not only to the work of Anderson, but to Mills and McNamara as well.
