Nidhogg, Mark Essen
Anyone else remember Mark Essen? He’s a video game artist and was included in the New Museum’s 2009 Triennial “Younger Than Jesus” at the age of 22. He made headlines for his age. At the time I was rather critical of his work; the primary selling point of his video game Flywrench was that it was minimalist and hard, which didn’t seem like such a big deal to me. But I don’t play many video games.
Anyway, I wondered what he was up to earlier this week and checked out his site. It turns out he uses GIFs to illustrate the games. He’s still using a low fi aesthetic, though now they aren’t very minimal. One of the sword fighters in the Nidhogg game above explodes into a pile of pixels when stabbed. It’s pretty brilliant, though some games feel a little too geared for dudes for me to fully appreciate. A sampling below.
