- Impressionist and modernist works did better in Sotheby’s second sale last night. The reason: they had more good work available. I guess we can all breath a sigh of relief now that we know rich people will still get returns on their art work. [The New York Times]
- The Times finally follows up on the Lucien Smith event/show last week in the Bronx. The party, which include art works like a car riddled with bullet holes, set off a lot of controversy amongst residents who felt the art was insensitive. The party was paid for by the Somerset Partners L.L.C. and the Chetrit Group, developers who are planning $400 million-plus residential-and-retail complex in the neighborhood. Anyway, Smith told the Times, “I understand where they are coming from. I think there has been a misunderstanding about how much of that show was about the Bronx necessarily versus the immediate location, which was an abandoned warehouse. That being said, people are always going to have their own interpretation.” Wouldn’t it be nice if Smith took some responsibility for this? [The New York Times]
- A listicle of pleasantries turned very, very bad. [Buzzfeed]
- A legally blind artist makes gifs about losing sight. A bit cheeseball. [My Modern Met]
- Jillian Steinhauer haaaates “Conversations”, a show of work from Bill and Camille Cosby’s personal collection and those from the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art. Not enough nuance, and of course, the representations of women are so narrow they are oppressive. Bill Cosby has been accused of sexual abuse by more than 50 women. [Hyperallergic]
