A pretty hilarious watchful kitty by Jeffrey Baij. The GIF is part of the show utopia-internet-distopia.com at the Wrong digital biennial. I found it through Tom Moody’s site, which is important because the navigation on the Wrong is close to useless: We see only show titles and 100 character show descriptions on the front page, most of which don’t even list the artists or the curator. It’s infuriating.
As for the show, it’s a simple project exploring the online binary of utopias and distopias within art making. Lots of simple gestures here that give the show a poetic quality without being overly precious about it. For example, Stefano Calligaro’s “Notions of Progress” shows a woman in front of a baguette that slowly changes color. Progress is simply change. Tom Moody also fits the theme here well, since his subject matter—science—almost implicitly connotes progress. As connected to modernity, this works almost certainly connect to utopia. (Though modernism’s failure informs the historical read, so it’s not surprising to hear Moody say that he intends to hit the middle line between Utopic and Distopic.
Anyway, the show is a nice closer to my evening. So, thanks for that Wrong!
