A year ago, Paul Garrin’s DNS alternative sounded crazy. After SOPA, he sounds like a visionary. A history, and an apology.

As is our annual tradition, I’ve asked people I know and respect to contribute their single favorite link for the year. No themes. No grand explanations. Just one link, and one sentence describing why they liked it. For the first time ever, this year I received no dupe links. The web is a much larger place than it used to be.

Don’t worry, we’ll be gentle. After this year’s auction protests, art fairs, and museum freakshows, it’s high time we sit our asses down to some video games. Here are a few art events that require little to no effort (in a good way) this month.

I’ve curated another show. Graphics Interchange Format is a survey of animated GIFs and it launches this Friday Denison University’s Mulberry Gallery. I’ll be heading to Ohio this afternoon for the install — uber nerds can follow me on twitter as I tweet up a storm about the installation process. The slightly less nerdy, uber-nerd can simply read the press release I’ve written up on the subject below and click on the links. GIFs are an important medium. If this show is a success — and I think it will be — it will demonstrate that. A website for the show will launch next week.

Nothing discredits artists quicker than adopting mantras that mean absolutely nothing to their practice. A note to young practitioners using “I’ve grown up with the Internet” as an accolade: Don’t do it.

I’m running a Kickstarter campaign to help raise funds for the production of an LP full of art sounds heard in New York called The Sound of Art. $10,000 is the base number I’d need to complete the project, a very scary number for an independently run blog such as this to raise. I deeply believe in this project though, and know that with your help, we can can make this happen.
