Art F City Announces New Commissions Program to Support Artists/Writers Affected by Trump Policies

These are not good times. None of Donald Trump’s bat-shit crazy ideas should ever see the light of day, much less take the form of executive orders (EO). But here we are, 12 days into his presidency and the chaos is taking root. Trump’s EO on visa bans effects 7 countries, approximately 90,000 people directly and innumerable more indirectly. His tariff plan to pay for a needless wall between the US and Mexico will cost Americans billions. And it’s already costing Mexicans—the peso is at a record low due to increased worries of Trump-led trade war.

None of this is beneficial to the country or the world, so we need to respond. There are many ways to do this, but here at AFC we’ve settled on a fairly direct approach. For the next year, we’re allocating $4,000 of our commissions budget to supporting artists, writers and cultural workers effected by Trump’s policies. If we’re able to raise more money for the program, we’ll increase that number.

Putting Artists First at SATELLITE

As I write this no less than six terrible karaoke singers are belting out “I will Always Love You”. This song and many others has been drifting down the halls of Artist-Run thanks to Stupid Bar, which oddly enough, is one of two bar installations at the Ocean Terrace Hotel. (Full disclaimer: Art F City’s F.A.G. Bar is the other installation and is situated next door.) A four foot mop of hair crawls through the hotel’s halls several times a day, as does a guy wearing a lamp shade for a hat and a telephone for a scarf, often followed by a seven-foot drag queen named Lazanya Ontre.

That’s just a whiff of what’s happening at Artist-Run at SATELLITE, an exhibition and curatorial project by Tiger Strikes Asteroid that invites artists to transform rooms in a derelict hotel called the Ocean Terrace into installations. You can actually feel the creative energy seep through the space, and after a week of looking at art safely quarantined in frames and vitrines, that feels nothing short of a miracle.

Jayson Musson’s New Web Series: No Art, Just Hip-Hop and Comedy

by Corinna Kirsch on January 20, 2015

What up, Internet?

Jayson Musson is back on YouTube, but not with his well-known “Art Thoughtz” web-series featuring Hennessy Youngman. Instead, we get “The Adventures of Jamel: The Time Traveling B-Boy,” created and written by the artist and directed and edited by Scott Ross. It’s flashy, and has more in common with Chappelle’s Show than Hennessy’s old show. Straight up, it’s a hip-hop comedy with sci-fi and social commentary thrown in the mix. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a pilot in the works for any premium cable channel.

Without giving away any spoilers, in the first episode, we’re introduced to:

  • An Iraqi baby skull filled with Merlot
  • The Illuminati
  • A time-traveling janitor
  • Mention of anal sex with goats
  • Breaking the bonds of slavery with the power of hip-hop

Are we playing Cards Against Humanity? No. This is just Jayson Musson’s new web-world, a world without art. So very populist of you, Musson.
