Notes on MonoDramas At The New York City Opera

"Erwartung" Music by Arnold Schoenberg. Libretto by Marie Pappenheim. Performed by Kara Shay Thomson

To my mind “Erwartung” was by far the weakest Monodrama. For one, there was almost no interest to a plot line that was supposed to resemble a dream. A woman treads through a forest, discovers her cheating lover killed (maybe), and later reveals it was she who murdered him (maybe). I did not care.

I think this series is more or less failed. Personally, I love Feldman and his opera set was pretty nice so it was good. But the other two was disappointed ,literally. Specially, though I do love John zorn, his opera was not good!!! at all.

just so you all know–opera singers are never mic’d. that is their voice, and their voice only.
